I just finished watching five episodes of the Adult Swim show, and I’m on the fence as to whether or not I think its funny. I’m also confused as to what kind of comedy it is.
There are funny moments – John C. Reilly as Dr. Steve Brule, Zach Galifinakis as Tairy Greene – but overall I found myself wondering if the show, and the comedy, were lazy.
Don’t get me wrong, I imagine this is the exact type of show I would make given my utter lack of focus, but despite a “theme” to each episode, there really is no cohesion, skits last 2 minutes at best, and the effect is like flipping a channel from station to station.
I also found myself wondering if John C. Reilly, who really is funny and talented, has sacrificed his career as a “serious” actor over the last five or six years because it seems he’s only been in comedies or wack-fests like this.
Here’s a clip of Reilly as Dr. Steve Brule, and while this particular clip wasn’t in the five episodes I watched today, I have the sense I have seen it. Here it is:
So what does everyone else think? Is it really funny? Am I missing something entirely? Or is using gravy truly the best method in which to comb your beard?
